Amazing US history paper

The Patriot
The movie "The Patriot" was filmed, directed, and released in 2000. It stars Mel
Gibson, Chris Cooper and Heath Ledger. The Patriot was written about the
Revolutionary War. The main character of the movie is fictional character Benjamin
Martin, a French and Indian war hero. The character is based on real life American
Revolution heros Andrew Pickens, Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan and Thomas
Sumter. The movie has had many critics based on its many historical inaccuracies.
Benjamin Martin is a father of seven by the time the revoltionary war comes to the
south. His eldest son, Gabriel, wants to enlist in the southern Continetal army and
constantly pesters his father about joining. Benjamin, knowing full well of the horrors of
the war, won't let Gabriel enlist. When there is a town meeting called to vote on
whether or not to support the rebellion, Gabriel runs off and enlists before Benjamin
can stop him.
After a few years of war progresses by, Gabriel suddenly arrives home and faints
from a wound he suffered when the British Dragoons rushed his division. His family
nurses him back to health while general Horatio Gates and the Continental Army fight
on their front lawn. After the battle, the Martin family tends to both the wounded British
and American soldiers. While they are adminsistering aid, the British Dragoons ride in
led by Colonel William Tavington. He orders the arrest of Gabriel and then shoots all
the wounded American soldiers. During Gabriels arrest, Thomas rushes the British
soldiers in an attempt to free his older brother. He is shot by Tavington. This sends
Benjamin Martin into a rage.
The movie described the battle of Cowpens in a very specific way. There wasn't
any mention of a second rally, or the militia starting the battle in the middle of the
continental armies formation. The film portrays the colonists as either regular people
from the colonial times, or as extremely radical men who are itching for war. The film
portrys African Americans very well. They only showed the slaves that were treated
kindly however. The film portrays women as house wives. They also displayed them as
elegant and very very airheaded in some cases. I think that the director tried to portray
Tavington as a monster because of his viewpoint that not all British generals were
plesant and upperclass.
i had an emotional reaction to Thomas' and Gabriels deaths. i was overjoyed when
Benjamin Martin killed Colonel Tavington. I had already seenthis movie a few times so
I didn't really learn anything new besides the fact that Gabriel was at Valley Forge. The
film changed my persepective on the colonists and colonial people. i thought that they
were much less civilized and less advanced than they were in war tactics. The movie
affected my learning in advancing my knowledge about the Revolutionary times.
The movie was extremely informative and reinforced my knowledge that was fading
away. It was inspirational and it taught me to value the sacrifices the men during those
times made for freedom.
